"It's amazing that Indonesia has won this competition for the first time, especially because we also won the Indonesian league title. We felt assured since we had early goals in mind. Hector Souto, head coach of BTS, remarked, "We are champions, so we should be satisfied that we won a tough game."
To be precise, Thai teams had previously won all six games, courtesy of Chonburi Bluewave in 2019, Port FC in 2015, 2016, and 2018, and Bangkok BTS in 2018. (2019 and 2021).
This time, Edison Machado Coelho was the primary source of inspiration for BTS. In an exciting match, BTS just upset defending champion Black Steel Manokwari to win the Indonesian League title.
Hongyen's Wendel Mendes and BTS captain Katawut Phoopan both came close to scoring early on, but Samuel Eko Tampubolon's swerving shot past Jaroenpong Prasansat gave BTS the lead in the 11th minute.
Four minutes later, Coelho increased BTS's advantage by avoiding two opponents and putting the ball beyond Jaroenpong.
Ampol Sriragaew's free kick in the 18th minute helped Hongyen recover as they began to exert greater pressure.
After Keattisak Songkhrao equalized two minutes into the second half, Hongyen's supporters rose to their feet.
But BTS stayed unwavering. At the halfway point, Andri Kustiawan regained the lead by capitalizing on a dropped ball. Six minutes later, Coelho maintained composure to shoot the ball into Hongyen's goal, bringing the score to 4-2.
When Hongyen's Katawut was sent off and BTS received two yellow cards, including one for head coach Souto, the thrilling championship game came to an end as time ran out and tempers flared.
